For instance,\nooi by itself cannot modify nouns (e.g., *ooi kujira (many whales)), which contrasts\nwith the behavior of ordinary adjectives (e.g., ookii kujira (large whales)). On the\nother hand, ooi by itself can be predicated of nouns, as in kujira ga ooi (Whales are\nmany (lit.)). What makes things complicated is that there are cases in which ooi\nby itself can modify nouns, as in (gakusei ga) ooi kurasu (the class that has many\nstudents). It seems that the parenthesized element is contextually inferred;\nhowever, for some unknown reason, such an inference does not occur in the case of\n*ooi kujira. This study attempts to explain when the attributive ooi is permitted.\nThe main proposal is that two distinct elements are required: (i) a set of entities\nthat ooi quantifies and (ii) one or more additional sets that are compared to the\nfirst set. This study also compares the attributive ooi to the predicative one.
