 note = {本稿は、現代アメリカの人種差別抗議運動に対する批判で知られる若き黒人コラムニスト、ポッドキャスター、ミュージシャン、ラッパーであるコールマン・ヒューズの思想、言論、表現活動を考察する。ヒューズをブッカー・T・ワシントン以来の黒人保守主義の系譜に位置づけ、インターネットやソーシャルメディアが従来のアカデミズムと主要メディアを脅かす役割を担うようになった現代の言説空間において、彼が果たしうる建設的な役割について展望している。ヒューズは共和党を支持しておらず、保守派を自認してもいないが、彼が書くコラムやラップ、ポッドキャスト番組での多彩なゲストとの対話から、彼が黒人保守主義の思考の枠組みと問題意識の伝統を受け継ぎ、黒人社会の「裏切り者」と見られることを戦略的に受け入れていることがわかる。過去10年、人種問題をめぐる米国民の分裂は加速し、保守派ではトランプ的な反知性主義ポピュリズムが、リベラル派でも過激な反人種主義や、キャンセルカルチャー、ウォーキズムが、事実に基づいた建設的な議論を阻害している。ヒューズのような中道的な黒人保守派言論人に期待される役割は、これまで以上に大きなものとなっている。
This paper examines the journalistic and artistic activities of Coleman Hughes, a young black columnist, podcaster, musician, and rapper known for his critique of the contemporary American racial protest movement. It situates Hughes in the lineage of black conservatism since Booker T. Washington, and considers the constructive role that he could play in the contemporary discursive space in which the Internet and social media threaten traditional academia and major media outlets. Although Hughes does not selfidentify as a conservative or support Republican politics, the columns and raps he writes and the conversations he has with a wide variety of guests on his podcast demonstrate that he has inherited the framework of thought and problematics of black conservatism. He also strategically accepts being seen by some as a "traitor" to the black community. In the past decade, the division of the American public over racial issues has accelerated, with both Trumpian anti-intellectual populism within conservatives and extreme anti-racism, cancel culture, and wokeism within liberals undermining constructive, fact-based debate. The potential role of a centrist black conservative like Hughes is more significant than ever.},
