Also a collection of sketches, the focus this time was on\nlife in the towns in the growing province of Ontario, Canada. While on one level\nthe text does offer portraits of the people and places in 19th century colonial\nCanada, a closer reading reveals a thematic consistency of wish-fulfillment with\nits predecessor. Mrs. Moodie’s quest to return to the England of her youth still\ninforms her interpretations of both Canada and England. What emerges from the\nnarrative in Life in the Clearing versus the Bush is more than a description of city\nlife, but a prescription for a utopia to be brought about with civilizing\ntechnologies Michel Foucault calls ‘spaces of domination’: the school, the\nasylum, the prison. According to Moodie’s narrative, only these constructs can\nreform citizens who can integrate into the perfect society, individuals like Moodie\nherself, who live under the indefinite discipline of a trained conscience.
